This adidas Argentina shirt, listed as being from circa 1991, recently sold at auction for £550.

Representing, as it does, a period in which legend Diego Maradona was serving a forced hiatus from international football, the change design may not have the cachet of some, but the Albiceleste did win the 1991 Copa América and featured many superstars of the time.

Even if there were no association with success, the shirt would still represent an attractive example of kit styling from the final portion of the 20th century, with a neat, embroidered-patch crest and the manufacturer’s famous Trefoil logo and triple-stripe taping on the shoulders and sleeves.

On the reverse, there is a contemporaneously styled number 5, acting as the icing on a cake of a lot which, perhaps justly, smashed its £200-300 estimate.

This item was sold by Graham Budd Auctions, a specialist in sporting memorabilia.
