At first glance, this football shirt is not aesthetically wondrous, in plain red with white crew neck and cuffs and with a white number 9 on the reverse that would not win any design awards.
It even has areas of tearing, unstitching and repair, but provenance is everything and the shirt was originally that of one Bobby Charlton of Manchester United - Sir Robert Charlton - and the aforementioned number features his autograph.
Reaching a whopping £17,000 at auction, this shouldn’t be a great surprise considering Charlton’s legendary status and the fact that the shirt is from an era when he was winning a host of titles, including the English league and the European Cup in club football and the World Cup for England.
