Recently selling at auction for an arguably modest £1100, this long-sleeved, Nike, David Platt Arsenal shirt takes us back to an early chapter of modern, monied football.
Fully decorated to mark the occasion intended for its use - 1998 FA Cup Final sleeve patches and chest embroidery - Platt actually took to the field midway through the second half wearing a short-sleeved version, but that doesn’t negate the historical value.
Arsenal, incidentally, came out on top against Newcastle United, while this relatively early example of Nike’s contribution to the Beautiful Game boasts jacquard patterning, the - inordinately intact - “Gunners” print on the lower back, and Platt’s personalisation on the reverse.
Predicted to fetch £600-800, the item did at least surpass that expectation, and its value will likely only grow.
