The story of the kit that Argentina wore in their iconic 1986 World Cup quarter-final win over England - “Diego Maradona x2” - is the stuff of legend, but this is a particular curio in its own right.
As part of the process of replacing the style of Le Coq Sportif Away shirt worn in the Mexico ’86 second round victory against Uruguay, coach Carlos Bilardo took scissors to the 7-numbered example belonging to Jorge Burruchaga - who would go on to score the winning goal in the final - to demonstrate an Aertex-style effect.
The other sweat-retaining shirts were disposed of but this one, which was gifted to Argentine kit man Tito, has stood the test of the last four decades and recently sold for £7,000 at auction.
