Emre Gultekin, a professional designer with significant pedigree in both kit history rendering and football kit design, has illustrated the evolution of Manchester United’s playing wear.
It’s a controversial start, with debate still raging on over whether the green and gold halves were ever worn by the “Newton Heath” edition of the club, but the attention to detail is on a par with many of the equivalents available, and it’s a project that’s incredibly easy on the eye.
Regarding that particular iconic design, Umbro’s purported retread is of course present and correct over one hundred years later, with tens of evocative creations in between - including shirts worn by the likes of Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best, as well as Viv Anderson and Norman Whiteside a little later.

Into the Premier League era, the likes of Bryan Robson and Mark Hughes are replaced in our minds by Ryan Giggs, Paul Ince, Roy Keane and, naturally, the popped collars of Eric Cantona.
It’s a retrospective that takes in Umbro, Admiral, adidas and Nike - some over more than one era - and glorious periods also boasting the talents of David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and the now returning hero Cristiano Ronaldo.
It helps to be a fan of the Red Devils, but few football (kit) fans will fail to be excited by Emre’s compilation of some of football design’s greatest hits. Man United have been blessed in that regard.
